PSP-2000 Japanese street date is Sept. 20
Sony has given the PSP-2000 (you must be joking with the name) a Japanese release date of Sept. 20. The handheld will release for ¥19,800 ($162) in six colors (black, white, silver and three pastels). If you'd like to know more about the gooey innards of the machine, feel free to check out what we learned from the manual. The PSP Lite PSP Slim PSP-2000 units will cost $199 in the US for an entertainment pack and $169 for the stand alone, they'll replace the original PSP model the same way the DS Lite replaced the phat.
What's with the awful names being banged around? Seriously, did nobody at Sony realize that the year 2000 happened seven years ago and calling the system the PSP-2000 seems just a tad counter-intuitive? Whatever, maybe it's just the Japanese name, although David Reeves seems to clearly say it's PSP-2000 for the Europeans as well. We'll find out soon enough when we get the North American presser with a release date.
Update: Yes, PSP-2000 is the model number (as PSP-1000 was the original). However, it is being referred to by Reeves (check the link above) and in widely reported articles as the PSP-2000 like that's the name. It will still be officially known as the PSP, as Sony is not rebranding the unit to differentiate it in consumer's minds. So the choice of Sony executives, instead of giving it a sexy name, is referring to it as the PSP 2000.

Twice as awesome as the T-1000
Luigi193 @ Jul 17th 2007 9:39AM
Guys, its called the 2000 cause its the FUTURE!!!!! O wait...
HalcyonGT @ Jul 17th 2007 9:39AM
What about a U.S. street date?
AirIntake @ Jul 17th 2007 9:40AM
Well, with only a 1200mAh battery it certainly looks like it's from the year 2000.
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 9:53AM
A much improved model. sales will increase a lot.
Crono @ Jul 17th 2007 10:57AM
Actually, I don't expect sales to change much at all. Reason being the common consumer (mom and dad) don't realize the changes. Additionally, the new changes, while welcome, aren't really a leap forward the way the DS Lite was. The DSPhats problems were dim screen and ugly form factor. Both were fixed. The PSP's problem is low battery life and lack of mindshare amongst consumers. PSP-2000 fixes neither.
Anam @ Jul 17th 2007 9:47AM
That's just two PSP-1000s duct-taped together!
Zertoss @ Jul 17th 2007 9:50AM
And sanded down to make them 33% lighter and 19% slimmer.
vidGuy @ Jul 17th 2007 9:50AM
PSP-1337 would have been so much better ;)
JodyAnthony @ Jul 17th 2007 9:52AM
or PSPlite
that way it looks like 'PSP Lite' but since it's pronounced 'PeeEssPeeleet' they cant get nintendo after them
Martin @ Jul 17th 2007 9:51AM
I don't really understand why they went from a battery with a larger capacity to one with a small capacity. Now that it is supposedly more efficient, wouldn't keep the larger capacity battery prove to have a longer life?
Maybe I'm missing something. It's possible.
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 9:57AM
PSP v2 will give you the same battery life as PSP v1. Sony managed to make the PSP battery consumption more efficient, so you get the same juice.
Martin @ Jul 17th 2007 1:13PM
Again, I must be missing the point. If they made the battery more efficient, why not just keep the same capacity battery and extend the battery life? Did they have to go to 1200mAh due to making the PSP-2000 slimmer?
whosmav @ Jul 17th 2007 9:52AM
I can't believe the name. One move after the other Sony continues to baffle me. I would've never thought you could destroy a brand like playstation, but its not standing for much anymore.
They wish it was still 2000.
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 9:56AM
you do realise this is just a model number, right? as in PSP-2000 is not the official name, but rather a model number which all consoles/portables have.
its still Sony PSP.
whosmav @ Jul 17th 2007 11:59AM
Ah...okay so its a dumb model number. My point still stands.
Jonah Falcon @ Jul 17th 2007 9:53AM
Mystery Science Console 3000.
deaftly @ Jul 17th 2007 9:54AM
knight rider 2000 > psp 2000
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 9:54AM

AirIntake @ Jul 17th 2007 9:57AM
But I don't care how efficient the PSP is. Electricity is cheap. What I do care about is play time, and this PSP doesn't have any more than the last one.
Psaakyrn @ Jul 17th 2007 10:04AM
And with that, there should also be other notable changes, like faster charge times.
Ironically, I'm hoping this comes out soon here so there'll be a price drop on the old version, so I can actually start playing some PSP games.. (like Puzzle Quest, which I still can't find in stores both versions, and I sadly obtained the PSP version as opposed to the DS version during the developer meeting . (Sad only because I don't own a PSP, so I'll be happy when I finally own one)
(note: price is the only thing stopping me from getting one at this point in time, and I buy games about once every 2 months so having good games on the PSP still wouldn't influence me as much as a lower price on it)
Aberu @ Jul 17th 2007 10:11AM
Seriously why do people complain about a 3-6 hour (I Am almost always able to get 6 hours out of the games I play, never had this mysterious 3 hour) charge time. When are you on the go, away from being able to charge, and need to game for over 6 hours? I just don't get it. You can play while it is charging if you are in a car. If you are on a train or a plane, they both have outlets usually. If you are on a bus to and from somewhere, well then that's pretty normal too, hope that doesn't take 6 hours out of your day. Seriously, where are you going to play on a handheld for over 6 hours out of the day?
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 9:56AM

polly @ Jul 17th 2007 9:57AM
They are not seriously going to call it that are they?
Christopher Grant @ Jul 17th 2007 9:58AM
The current PSP is called the PSP-1000, so PSP-2000 is an obvious name ... but that still doesn't excuse how bizarre it is. How about a little marketing sex appeal, Sony?
Zertoss @ Jul 17th 2007 10:09AM
They have the local news stations for that.
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 9:59AM
AirInTake,
true. im pretty sure Sony will release higher capacity slim v2 batteries for the PSP v2, as they did for the PSP v1.
AirIntake @ Jul 17th 2007 10:01AM
I hope so. I want a portable that has 12+hours of play time. I know they can do it.
Konny @ Jul 17th 2007 10:02AM
Since they went from:
PS to PSOne and PS2 to PStwo .. what about PSPii?
... steal some free hype from Wii.
Farseer @ Jul 17th 2007 10:03AM
Wow Curmeo,
You sure loves your PSP (2000 or otherwise). Are you a reseller, or do you just have a lot of Sony stock?
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 10:05AM
neither. i dont even own a PSP. but im getting v2 as soon as its released. sold my DS Phat after playing MK DS to death.
Farseer @ Jul 17th 2007 10:07AM
But why would you sell your DS phat? Don't you know that it prints money?!?

vidGuy @ Jul 17th 2007 10:06AM
What about PS-Hit? Cause I mean, that's what it is. A hit I mean ;)
Yes, we know it's a model number, but unless that was thick sarcasm I'm not sure Sliwinski knows it.
Also, the Wii has REV - as in Revolution - in its model number since they made the numbers before the name announcement.
Tom @ Jul 17th 2007 10:10AM
Wow. People are seriously stupid. PSP-2000 IS NOT THE NAME IT'S THE MODEL NUMBER. I can understand some general nobody who knows nothing about consumer products or the Playstation brand in particular posting comments. But the author or the article who is supposed to know what he's talking about.. I guess any moron can create articles for joystiq. God...
spamulike05 @ Jul 18th 2007 5:30AM
RTFA fuckwit. People in the media have been refering to it as the PSP-2000, and since Sony have not bothered to give it a proper title, it's likely that this "2000" moniker will stick.
Briz9 @ Jul 17th 2007 10:14AM
PSP-2000 is just a model number, like someone has already pointed out (but obviously ignored). It's still just called the PSP. C'mon Alexander. You should know better.
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 10:16AM
unfortunately Sony haters will take advantage of every opportunity to make fun of/hate on Sony, even if some of them knew PSP-2000 is just a model number.
Anam @ Jul 17th 2007 10:23AM
You guys seriously need to lighten up. We're just passing the time making some jokes about the new PSP. I don't think anyone seriously cares what it's named.
Psaakyrn @ Jul 17th 2007 10:16AM
Hmm....
on a minor note, searching for PSP-2000 on google gives http://www.cs.umu.se/~c99fdt/psp2000/ as the first hit... maybe we can force Sony to change the awful name? :x
vidGuy @ Jul 17th 2007 10:16AM
What I find interesting is that the model # suggests Sony thinks this redesign is significant (as in PSP2.0). I don't see that much improvement over the original design. It's like a PSP and a new ram dimm duct taped into a new case.
Curmeo @ Jul 17th 2007 10:19AM
its lighter, thinner, faster, better screen (no ghosting), improved dpad/face buttons, video out, usb charging. id say thats a pretty good upgrade, especially since the price hasnt increased.
Vidikron @ Jul 17th 2007 10:48AM
Not really. The PS2 had model numbers like SCPH-10000, SCPH-50000, and SCPH-70000.
Mr Khan @ Jul 17th 2007 6:23PM
I was surprised no one else caught on to that
The x000 model number was what they did with the PS2 a number of times, its name is grounded in precedent
Anam @ Jul 17th 2007 10:24AM
@Curmeo
Yes, but other than that, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Farseer @ Jul 17th 2007 10:27AM
They've imposed upon us the importance of having two jobs... if you want to buy their products, that is...
(sorry, couldn't help it)
Curt @ Jul 17th 2007 10:24AM
Is Sony retarded?
JonnyBoy2U @ Jul 17th 2007 10:42AM
Lol...to put it simply...
Yes
And it doesn't matter what they call its still not that big a difference between the original and the new version. That plus the games library when compared to the DS is beyond pathetic.
And this is from someone whos last handheld was the GBA. Although I'm really interested in getting a DS Lite. The problem is that I don't have time enough for my Wii and 360 as it is so I have no clue when I'd fit a handheld into my schedule.
JRM @ Jul 17th 2007 10:26AM
it really doesn't matter what they call it. 1) There's practically no difference from the first one. 2) No one's going to buy one anyway.
Psaakyrn @ Jul 17th 2007 10:33AM
1) There's 4-5 differences, look it up. (up this chat, I mean.)
2) Despite what you think, there ARE good compelling games for the PSP.
3) Despite what you think, the PSP has NOT failed. Just because one has lower sales doesn't mean that it's not successful. In fact, one could say that the PSP is the only successfull non-Nintendo portable game console since the advent of GameBoy.
vidGuy @ Jul 17th 2007 10:38AM
I always knew the Gamecube was a success.
